Reusable : Over 500 billion plastic bags are discarded every year, polluting soil and water, killing marine mammals, birds, and turtles. On the other hand a single re-usable jute bag over the period of its life time can replace thousand more plastic bag. Plastic shopping bags were introduced to world marketplace in the late 1970s. They now make up 80% of the bags provided at grocery stores, resulting in a currently estimated 500 billion to one trillion plastic bags being dumped into trash or in the landfills each year. Nearly one million bags every minute. That isn't counting the plastic bags littering streets, clogging drains and sewers, and floating ocean-bound through our waterways. Once there, they can take hundreds of years to decompose, and when they do, their toxic remains pollute both soil, air and water. It has been calculated that if the estimated four billion plastic trash bags that are littered every year were tied and-to-end, the result would be long enough to circle the globe 63 times. Currently a plastic trash island, estimated to be the size of Texas, floats in the currents of the Pacific Ocean.
